Stats reveal Chelsea’s new center-back as their top-rated player this season

This afternoon, it was confirmed that Trevoh Chalobah’s loan spell at Crystal Palace has been terminated, with the defender set to return to Chelsea immediately.

According to David Ornstein, Chalobah is expected to become an “important player” for the Blues, a move that aligns with logic. He was Chelsea’s best defender last season after recovering from injury, and the decision to loan him out while signing Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer never truly made sense.

While financial considerations like FFP or PSR calculations may have necessitated the loan, the underlying issue lies in Chelsea’s initial mismanagement. This recall underscores the sporting structure’s misjudgment, a sentiment reinforced by Chalobah’s impressive performance statistics.

Chalobah has made 12 appearances for Crystal Palace this season, delivering a standout Premier League rating of 6.92. This is particularly notable given Palace’s struggles, as the team currently sits 15th in the league. Chalobah’s ability to consistently perform well, even in a challenging environment, highlights his quality.

In comparison, Chelsea’s defensive options have not matched Chalobah’s level. Wesley Fofana, with a rating of 6.75, comes closest, but he’s sidelined for most of the season. Levi Colwill (6.71), Tosin Adarabioyo (6.66), Benoit Badiashile (6.52), Axel Disasi (6.50), and Josh Acheampong (6.02) all fall short statistically.

Chalobah’s return presents a prime opportunity for him to reintegrate into Chelsea’s backline and reclaim the role he should have never vacated. With his proven capabilities and the team’s current defensive challenges, Chalobah’s presence could provide much-needed stability.
